3 Safety Tips to Reduce the Risks with Working at Heights

Michael Cohen • Mar 28, 2021
Every year over 40,000 workers get injured due to accidental falls while working at heights in Canada. According to the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA), working and falling from heights has been one of the leading causes of fatalities and injuries in the construction industry for years. Working at heights refers to any kind of work where a person is expected to climb or ascend to a place where a fall could result in a serious injury or death. This includes working with ladders, working on rooftops, or even working on loading docks.

Some of the common reasons for accidental falls when working at heights include, not having the proper equipment, not knowing how to use the equipment correctly, lack of safety features, and not having proper safety training.

While nothing beats proper training, here are some safety tips that can help mitigate the risk of working at heights for your employees and reduce the likelihood of accidental falls:

Install Guard Rails Wherever Possible

Guard rails are one of the easiest options to reduce the risk of accidental falls and ensure the protection of employees working at heights. This allows workers to stay safe even when they aren’t actively aware of the dangers. Guard rails also make it possible for employees to work at heights without requiring safety harnesses and bulky safety equipment. However, the employers must make certain the railing is strong, won’t buckle under the weight of a worker if they lose their footing and collide with it.

Get Proper PPE And Inspect Before Each Use

Employers and managers must provide proper PPE to employees when they are working at heights. However, simply providing fall protection safety equipment is not enough. The workers must be trained on how to use it and inspect it before every use to ensure maximum protection. The PPE should be of good quality, inspected regularly, and any damaged or defective equipment should be discarded immediately to prevent accidents due to negligence.

Don’t Allow Untrained Employees to Work at Heights

The best way to prevent falls and accidents and ensure the safety of your employees is to restrict any workers from working at heights unless they have proper training and are aware of all safety protocols. You should also make sure that no incompetent or inexperienced workers are given tasks that require climbing ladders or working at heights to avoid compromising their safety, as well as the safety of other employees working with them.
