5 Essential Tips to Boost Workplace Safety

Michael Cohen • Mar 30, 2021
Workplace safety is about more than just getting a safety services professional to approve the setup. Health and safety come from the thorough day-to-day practice of standards that have been set.
Here are some of our recommendations on improving workplace safety, from proper resource stocking to enforcing health and safety training.

Have Detailed Health and Safety Policies

There are a lot of health and safety practices we perform or enforce in the workplace every day. For example, if your business has offices and you make sure to buy only ergonomic workstations, that’s one way you practice H&S. However, if you don't have a well-written policy, you should really get on that.

A comprehensive, written policy will give your employees clarity on how to deal with H&S for every kind of situation. It also means that there’s accountability for health and safety in your company.

Create a Reporting System

Even if you have health and safety standards in place, you can’t guarantee that the workplace will never face an unsafe situation. You need to make sure your employees can report an unsafe situation or a violation without feeling like their job is under threat for doing so.

This relates directly to workplace harassment and violence. A junior employee dealing with inappropriate behavior from their line manager should have the ability to report it safely.

Stock First Aid Boxes and Safety Resources

You can enforce all the first aid training for your employees or working at heights courses you want. If your employees don’t have the resources at hand, you’re exposing them to health and safety risks.

This means ensuring that harnesses, proper protective equipment, first aid resources, and all other materials needed to enforce your H&S standards are always available in the workplace. You should also make sure that your employees know where to get these resources.

Maintain Workplace Order

Order in the workplace is essential to health and safety. Why is that? If a workplace is chaotic and disorganized, there’s more room for error that can cause an urgent health or safety situation. This also makes it easier for H&S compliance errors to slip through the cracks.

Keeping your worksite or offices organized can go a long way in keeping the workplace safe for your employees.

Enforce Regular Training

Without proper health and safety training, your workers may be putting themselves at risk without knowing it. You need to ensure that all of your employees are trained for their specific duties, including first aid, CPR, and hazard recognition.
